Orillia is one of southern Ontario’s most charming cities. With its proximity to cottage country and almost 30 kilometres worth of trails within the city itself, it’s no question why those who favour an active lifestyle choose to call this place home.

Along with a bounty of green space perfect for weekend strolls, downtown Orillia is extremely walkable (the WalkScore is 97!). With almost every amenity you could possibly need within a few minutes from the core, you’re free to ditch your wheels for most errands, recreation and entertainment.

Although it’s tough to narrow down, we’ve picked our five favourite spots in downtown Orillia (and within five minute walk from Matchedash Lofts!).

Couchiching Beach Park
Appropriately named after the lake on which it’s situated on, Couchiching Beach spans 14.5 acres and supports a variety of year-round activities. Adorned with expertly manicured flower gardens and historic monuments, this park is the perfect place for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. The Rotary Aqua theatre houses musical performances and other events. Swim at the beach in the summer and bundle up for ice skating in the winter – this place has it all!

Orillia Museum of Art and History

With a series of ongoing events as well both permanent and featured collections, the Orillia Museum of Art and History is the ideal destination for those looking for a healthy dose of culture. Past exhibits include the annual International Women’s Day Art Show, as well as Carmichael Canadian Landscape Exhibition. The museum’s main focus is on preserving the history of Orillia and the surrounding area through artifacts, artwork, archival photographs and more. With over 12,000 donated pieces, it’s an excellent place to learn about the roots of the city itself, and the people who made it what it is today.

Port of Orillia

Located at the foot of downtown Orillia and Lake Couchiching, the Port of Orillia is a popular summer weekend destination for locals and tourists alike. A short walk to shops and restaurants, trails and parks, it’s known as “The Jewel of the Trent”. The recently completed Orillia Waterfront Centre is a modern structure that houses the visitor information office, boat rental and docking info and more.

Orillia Opera House

Orillia is a city with a lively art scene, and the opera house is a large contributor. Operating since 1895, it is a long time staple in the community and a focal point for downtown culture. The building features a large theatre space with 700 seats for popular performances along with an intimate studio space with 100 seats. Residents can look forward to a multitude of events here throughout the year, ranging from music to theatre. Along with regular local performances, many national stars have graced the stage at The Orillia Opera House, from Gordon Lightfoot to Blue Rodeo.

Orillia Public Library

The Orillia Public Library is located on Mississaga street in a gorgeous, newly renovated state of the art building. Along with book and DVD rentals, the library provides meeting and study rooms, business services (internet, fax and copy) and even a 3D printer! A bright and welcoming environment that fosters education in a multitude of ways, the Orillia Public Library is a great resource for those of all ages.

BONUS: Orillia Recreation Facility

Upon completion, The Orillia Recreation Facility will be located at 255 West Street, just outside of the centre of downtown. The beautifully designed facility will include a full aquatic centre with lap, leisure and therapy pools, a gymnasium, running track, fitness centre and so much more. Set to open in 2018, this centre will be an incredible addition to Orillia and introduce a variety of new programs to the city’s residents.
