The Building

Nestled in historic downtown Orillia, Matchedash Lofts will bring urban character to Ontario’s heartland, helping to define the downtown core with a mixed-use industrial-style building. With a WalkScore of 97®, the project caters to a walkable environment.

The building design is guided by the principles of new urbanism and Orillia’s Downtown Tomorrow waterfront revitalization plan; with an emphasis on a healthy lifestyle and community. The development will consist of loft style live/work, garden and lake-view terrace units, as well as commercial and retail space at Mississaga Street. Inspired by the charm and character of the city, Matchedash Lofts will be a tailored addition to Orillia’s historic downtown.

History of Matchedash

  1. Temperance Hall

In 1854 Sons of Temperance division of Orillia decided to build a hall for meetings, selling shares for $4 each. The Sons bought a site on Matchedash Street and built a 25 foot by 45 foot wooden hall with a platform at one end. Completed in the late 1850s the Temperance Hall became the town hall of Orillia, hosting events such as meetings, concerts, church services, and weddings.

  2. The Russell House

As the lumber boom brought an end to the Temperance movement with whiskey prices falling to 50¢ per gallon, Temperance Hall became the Russell House hotel with rooms for $1.50 per night.

  3. The Royal Hotel

In the 1920’s the Russell House continued its life as a hotel under the name Royal Hotel. The Royal succumbed to a fire in 1949 that burned all the buildings along Matchedash Street South to the ground.

  4. J W Clarke Motors

In 1948 JW Clarke bought the derelict site to create a General Motors car dealership in the heart of Orillia.

  5. Russell Pontiac

JW Clarke Motors was purchased by an employee, Frank Russell, and rebranded as Russell Pontiac.

  6. Paterson Pontiac Buick Cadillac

In 1984 ownership changed again to the Paterson family where the property continued as a car dealership until it closed in the 2000’s. The property has since sat waiting to be reborn at Matchedash Lofts.
